How
is leadership changing?
Adriana Galgano is an

importance.
Nowadays organizations are facing four tough
challenges:
- dizzyingly fast technological progress which offers
extraordinary opportunities but it is becoming ever more complex to cope
with;
- even faster change which means
continuous demands on people who work in
companies;
- sudden shocks, for example those caused by
catastrophes, such as hurricanes Katrina and Rita. These situations require immediate and, sometimes, extreme
reactions;
- international scenary which is becoming
the everyday horizon for plans and
actions, even for small companies.
An important awareness is spreading: individual leadership skills
are not enough to overcome these challenges anymore.
Today companies need leadership skills at every level of their
hierarchy.
This is the first change. Leadership is a skill which works across the whole
organization, it is not linked to just a few people at the top.
Driving people, aligning them to the company strategy and motivating them are skills
to be developed in every person who is in charge of coordinating human
resources.
A recent survey has been conducted in which 300 managers from 38 countries were interviewed. This survey shows that 55% of those interviewed think that these skills
are not developed highly enough in their company.
Secondly, some components of leadership skills are now considered more important than others. For example, building and improving relations, driving change, raising participation are now considered more important than problem solving and decision making skills.
Finally, focus is moving from leaders as diamond-points of their organisations to leaders
as creators of successful teams which have continued success even after they have gone.
In the survey mentioned above, the Managers interviewed declared that teambuilding is becoming as important as the activity of
“making numbers”. Teambuilding which is becoming ever harder because in many companies teams are now multicultural and interfunctional!
