There is a man who can teach you how to speak in public.
The pleasure of feeling Demosthenes
 Vittorio Galgano is the Ottantaventi seminar leader.
He is the author of the book "Come
Parlare in Pubblico" (How to speak in
public)
and speaker for the course "How to speak in public" which will be held
in Milan and in Perugia.
"What a woman!", says the instructor with an emphatic tone, arching his eyebrow. "What a woman”, repeats the instructor, with a soft voice, curling his lips. "You see,
the words are the same, but the way of pronouncing them and the body language that goes with them completely change their meaning". Ten participants listen carefully and nod. Definitely, the two women they imagined
were very different.
The strange lesson is held in a private room of a large hotel downtown. Participants: the chairman of the company, three chief executive officers, two general managers, a manager and three
businessmen. They all sit around a table, with the Instructor
Vittorio Galgano, in his grey suit and waistcoat, well shaven, looking very
reassuring. He is a middle aged man, with a nonchalance and smile which come from knowledge that can open the way to success.
It is the first day of a new discipline for these participants: how to speak in public. More than sixty people a year, in groups of ten to twelve, lock themselves up for two days, eight hours a day, in that small room to learn how to overcome their shyness in front of others.
A beautiful woman, director of a weekly magazine, who has had problems
with unions, talks about her satisfaction at the end of the course: "While remembering all those rules it is impossible to think of shyness. And this is the first step to start learning to speak in public".
Transmitting and not communicating, this is the first notion to learn for a
business person who does not want any communication barriers in their
career. Besides verbal language, the two day course also includes an in depth explanation of
body language. Finally the Instructor also gives a few suggestions on business fashion, always mentioning the persuasive experiment which took place in the United States: a person, dressed each time in a different way, was asked to go to
the front desk of a bank. Depending on the apparel he was wearing, the treatment he received was totally different.
If, as it seems, the course has increasing success, most managers will
soon be Demosthenes. Galgano, besides teaching how to say “What a woman” teaches you how to
say: "You are fired”, but with such grace and determination that it seems to be a piece of good news.
